May 4, 2016. #14. My 2002 MIM Agave Blue is heavily modified. New maple neck from a blacktop tele, Dimarzio bridge pickup, all new electronics, new bridge with three saddles. All that is original is the neck pickup, pickguard, strap holders and body. Great guitar that is as good as any American Standard Tele.

I just checked - the Blacktop pickguard has a wider bridge pickup cut out (compared to a standard Tele pickguard) to accommodate the humbucker ring. I guess you could purchase a standard Tele pickguard and cut the opening wider. Also - STILL waiting on the Bill Lawrence pickups. Sheesh!

It was a fine, well made guitar but I decided that the humbuckers were too hot/dark for me, so instead of swapping them out, since it was still all original, I traded the guitar. It would have been a KILLER guitar, for ME, with different pickups.

Modified telecaster to be way more metal. Black hardware upgrades and removed a humbucker. It came to me this way. I will be installing the 3-way switch to be a traditional esquire. This cut/boost adds an ample amount of tonal options. This model was first introduced in 1951 and you can look up the history and specs. Hard gator case included.

Love the twang. I wanted a black HH Telecaster so I bought a Blacktop back when they first came out. I never really fell in love with it so I sold it. I got a '72 Telecaster Deluxe because it was on sale. To be fair my Deluxe is probably my best guitar I own. Something that I can't pin point is off though. It's a Telecaster but it isn't.

I'd like to see more of the Blacktop. The one I saw had a much nicer neck than you see on the Classic Deluxe line. It seemed a decent step up from the MIM Standard. Me, my ideal Tele would retain the classic bridge pickup with bucker in the neck. My ol' trusty is a 3-pup Nashville Tele and if I had the nerve I'd put a bucker in the neck.
